A piece of historical calligraphy by the Zen monk Sakugen Shūryō, documenting his travels to China during the sixteenth century.
Sakugen Shūryō was a Zen monk of the Tenryū-ji school who travelled to Ming China on two diplomatic missions between 1539 and 1549. This piece of calligraphy documents his observations regarding the natural springs found within Jiangsu Province. The text reflects the scholarly tradition of the period, where travel diaries and poetic accounts served as a primary means of recording cultural and geographical encounters.
The brushwork displays the fluid, rhythmic quality characteristic of the Zen calligraphic tradition. Each character is formed with a balance of speed and control, showing the variation in ink density that occurs as the brush moves across the paper surface. The composition is vertical, following the traditional format for such records, with the characters arranged to create a sense of movement and spatial harmony. The ink remains dark and crisp against the aged paper, which has acquired a subtle, warm tone over the centuries.
This work provides a window into the intellectual life of a Japanese monk during the sixteenth century. It captures the intersection of travel, observation, and the meditative practice of writing. The presence of the red seal at the lower left serves as a formal mark of the author, grounding the text in its historical context. As a piece of historical documentation, it offers insight into how Japanese travellers perceived the geography and culture of the Chinese mainland during the Ming era. The work is mounted on a decorative textile border, which frames the central text and provides a contrast to the monochrome ink work. This print reproduces the original calligraphy, maintaining the texture of the ink and the subtle variations in the paper grain.
