A woodblock print by Shiba Kōkan depicting a fisherman at work, characterised by clean lines and a restrained, naturalistic aesthetic.
This woodblock print originates from the collection titled A Garden of Pictures by Kyoto Artists (Keijō gaen), attributed to the Japanese polymath and artist Shiba Kōkan. Kōkan was a significant figure during the Edo period, known for his interest in Western scientific techniques and artistic methods, which he integrated into his own practice. This specific work captures a fisherman in a moment of physical exertion, pulling a line from the water. The composition is sparse, focusing the viewer's attention on the figure and his immediate action. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the calligraphic quality of the lines to define the form and movement of the subject. The fisherman wears a traditional straw cape, rendered with short, textured strokes that suggest the material's coarse nature. The water is indicated by simple, rhythmic marks, maintaining a sense of balance within the frame. Kōkan's work often reflects his curiosity regarding the world beyond Japan, yet this piece remains firmly within the stylistic conventions of Japanese printmaking of the late 18th century. The print demonstrates a clear economy of means, where every line serves a purpose in conveying the narrative of the scene. The figure's posture, leaning back against the tension of the rope, provides a sense of weight and effort. This piece offers a glimpse into the observational style of Kōkan, who frequently documented the daily lives and labours of people in his surroundings. The paper tone and the subtle application of colour reflect the aesthetic preferences of the period, prioritising clarity and harmony over excessive ornamentation. It is a representative example of the woodblock printing tradition that flourished in Japan, showcasing the technical skill required to translate ink drawings into reproducible images.
