A classic woodblock print by Ryūkōsai Jokei depicting kabuki actors in the traditional Osaka style.
This woodblock print originates from the Kamigata region of Japan, specifically Osaka, where the tradition of yakusha-e (actor prints) flourished during the late eighteenth century. Ryūkōsai Jokei, an active practitioner in this genre, produced this work as part of a series documenting the theatrical culture of the period. The composition features two figures rendered in the distinct style associated with the Osaka school, which often prioritised the specific facial features and mannerisms of individual kabuki performers over the more idealised depictions found in Edo-based prints.
The left figure displays a stern, focused expression, while the right figure is depicted with a softer, more graceful posture. Both subjects are dressed in traditional kimono, with the right figure's garment featuring a subtle floral pattern. The inclusion of calligraphic text surrounding the figures provides context, likely identifying the actors or the specific roles they performed during the theatrical season. The lines are precise and economical, reflecting the technical requirements of woodblock carving. The paper exhibits the natural ageing characteristic of eighteenth-century Japanese prints, with a warm, off-white tone that complements the monochromatic ink work.
Ryūkōsai Jokei is recognised for his contributions to the development of the Osaka print tradition.
