Friedrich Weber

Friedrich Weber spent much of his career in Paris and Munich refining the technical demands of copperplate engraving. Before his appointment as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, he studied the Old Masters in European galleries. Unlike many of his contemporaries who sought rapid production, Weber spent years on individual plates to ensure the tonal values were accurate.

Portrait of Friedrich Weber

Biography

His approach focused on the translation of oil paintings into monochrome or limited colour prints. He specialised in portraiture and classical figures. In his versions of Lais Corinthiaca and Hans Holbein, he used a systematic hatching technique to recreate the weight of velvet and the smoothness of skin. This method allowed him to maintain the clarity of the original work while adding the specific texture of a hand-cut plate.

These prints appeal to collectors who appreciate the technical skill of the 19th-century Swiss school. His portraits of Dante Alighieri and Leonardo da Vinci provide a sense of historical continuity. The sharp lines and balanced compositions work well in modern rooms that require a clear, figurative element without the visual noise of modern abstraction.
