A detailed nineteenth-century engraving by Friedrich Weber, depicting the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and Saint John the Baptist.
This engraving by Friedrich Weber reproduces the composition of the Madonna of the Veil, a subject associated with the workshop of Raphael. The work depicts the Virgin Mary lifting a transparent veil to reveal the sleeping Christ Child, while the young Saint John the Baptist kneels to the right, holding a small cross. The figures occupy a foreground defined by soft, rounded forms and gentle drapery, which contrasts with the architectural ruins visible in the background.
Weber, a German engraver active during the mid-nineteenth century, demonstrates a high degree of technical precision in this print. The use of line work creates subtle gradations of tone, particularly in the rendering of the veil and the shadows cast across the figures. The background features a classical ruin, a common motif in European art of the period, which provides a sense of historical distance and atmospheric depth. The composition follows the conventions of the Italian Renaissance, prioritising balance and clarity of form.
As an engraver, Weber was tasked with translating the tonal qualities of a painted original into the monochromatic language of the print medium. His approach relies on a systematic arrangement of lines to define volume and texture. The resulting image captures the quiet, devotional nature of the original scene. This print offers a view into the nineteenth-century practice of disseminating Renaissance imagery through reproductive engraving. It serves as a record of how historical masterpieces were interpreted and shared by artists working in the decades following the height of the Neoclassical movement. The print remains a clear example of the technical skill required to maintain the integrity of a complex composition while working within the constraints of the copper plate.
