A 1912 portrait by Henri Matisse depicting a seated woman in a patterned kaftan, set against a bold blue background with a goldfish bowl.
Henri Matisse painted Zorah on the Terrace during his second visit to Tangier, Morocco, in 1912. The work depicts a young woman seated in a meditative posture, positioned centrally against a stark, expansive blue background. Her attire, a patterned kaftan, features geometric motifs that echo the decorative traditions of the region. To her side, a glass bowl containing goldfish sits upon a dark surface, a recurring motif in the artist's work from this period. A pair of slippers rests on the floor to the left, adding a domestic detail to the composition.
Matisse employs a flattened perspective, prioritising the arrangement of colour planes over traditional modelling. The blue wall behind the figure creates a sense of enclosure, while the diagonal line of the terrace wall introduces a sharp geometric division to the space. The application of paint is direct, with visible brushwork that maintains the surface quality of the canvas. The palette is dominated by cool tones, contrasted by the warm orange hues of the goldfish and the red accents on the slippers. This work reflects the artist's interest in the light and atmosphere of North Africa, which he visited multiple times between 1911 and 1913. By simplifying the forms and focusing on the interaction of colour, Matisse captures a moment of stillness. The painting is part of a series of works produced in Morocco that demonstrate his move towards a more abstract and decorative approach to representation. The figure of Zorah appears in several other paintings from this trip, serving as a consistent subject for his explorations of colour and pattern.
