A precise 1502 study of a hare by Albrecht Dürer, rendered with meticulous attention to fur texture and anatomical detail.
Albrecht Dürer created this study of a hare in 1502. It is a work of precise observation, executed in watercolour and bodycolour. The artist captures the animal in a crouched position, focusing on the texture of the fur and the alertness of the creature. Dürer uses a combination of fine brushstrokes and washes to build the volume of the hare, moving from lighter tones to darker, denser patches of brown and grey. The whiskers are rendered with thin, sharp lines, while the ears show a careful study of light and shadow.
This piece is an example of the artist's interest in the natural world. Dürer moved away from the symbolic representations common in medieval art, choosing instead to document the physical reality of his subject. The hare is positioned against a plain background, which directs the viewer's attention to the anatomical details. The signature monogram and the date are visible at the bottom, indicating the artist's pride in this specific observation. The work remains a primary example of early modern naturalism, demonstrating how Dürer applied his technical skill to subjects outside of religious or portraiture commissions.
The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the print. The composition is balanced, with the hare occupying the centre of the frame. This study provides insight into the methods used by Northern Renaissance artists to record biological subjects. It is a direct, honest depiction that avoids unnecessary ornamentation, relying on the quality of the draughtsmanship to convey the subject's presence.
