A 1911 oil painting by Henri Matisse, featuring a complex arrangement of patterns, decorative screens, and still life objects in a flattened interior space.
Painted in 1911, Still Life with Aubergines is a significant example of Henri Matisse's exploration of decorative space and colour. The composition is dominated by a dense, patterned environment where the distinction between foreground and background is intentionally flattened. Matisse employs a dark blue wall covered in a repetitive floral motif, which creates a sense of enclosure. This pattern competes with the other decorative elements in the room, such as the green folding screen and the patterned tablecloth.
The aubergines, from which the work takes its name, rest upon a table alongside a ceramic vessel and a small figurine. These objects are rendered with a focus on their form rather than traditional perspective. Through the window on the right, a glimpse of a garden provides a contrast to the interior scene, though it remains stylistically integrated into the overall decorative scheme. The use of flat planes of colour and the rejection of conventional modelling are characteristic of the artist's approach during this period. Matisse was interested in how different patterns and colours could coexist within a single frame, creating a visual rhythm that directs the eye across the canvas. The work reflects his interest in Islamic art and textiles, which often utilised similar methods of layering patterns to create a sense of depth without relying on traditional vanishing points. By prioritising the surface of the painting, Matisse invites the viewer to engage with the arrangement of shapes and hues as a cohesive, constructed reality rather than a window into a three-dimensional space.
