A striking example of British Pop Art, this work by Patrick Caulfield uses bold outlines and flat colour to explore the relationship between domestic space and representation.
Patrick Caulfield, a central figure in British Pop Art, is known for his precise, graphic approach to the depiction of domestic spaces. In Interior with a Picture (1985), the artist employs his signature style: flat areas of colour bounded by bold, black outlines. This work presents a domestic scene that feels both familiar and detached. The composition is structured around a stark, geometric interplay of light and shadow, which divides the room into distinct planes. A bright, yellow beam of light cuts across the wall, illuminating a patterned wallpaper that contrasts with the surrounding solid, dark surfaces.
Caulfield introduces a meta-narrative element by including a smaller, more traditionally rendered still life within the larger composition. This framed painting, depicting a candle and simple tableware, sits within the modern, simplified environment of the room. The juxtaposition between the realistic detail of the inner picture and the stark, reductive treatment of the surrounding space is a hallmark of Caulfield's practice. He often explored the relationship between the viewer, the painted object, and the space it occupies.
The colour palette is deliberate, using muted browns and deep reds to ground the composition, while the sharp yellow light and green accents provide a sense of artificiality. The inclusion of a staircase silhouette on the left adds to the architectural complexity of the scene. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Caulfield forces the viewer to focus on the arrangement of shapes and the interplay of light. This work demonstrates his ability to transform mundane domestic settings into carefully constructed visual puzzles, inviting a quiet contemplation of the nature of representation itself.
