A 1967 screenprint by Patrick Caulfield, featuring a collection of everyday objects rendered in bold, flat colours and thick black outlines.
Patrick Caulfield, a central figure in British Pop Art, produced this screenprint in 1967. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to the still life genre, which relies on simplified forms and bold, black outlines. By stripping away the traditional textures and shading associated with the subject, Caulfield focuses the viewer on the essential geometry of the objects: a jug, several glasses, and a bowl.
The composition is deliberately flat, rejecting the illusion of three-dimensional space. The objects are arranged against a solid, uniform blue background, which forces the primary colours of the vessels to the front. The red jug, yellow glass, and green bowl appear as graphic symbols rather than realistic representations. This method of reduction allows the artist to explore the relationship between colour and shape, rather than the physical properties of the objects themselves.
Caulfield often drew inspiration from commercial art and signage, adopting a clean, impersonal aesthetic that contrasts with the expressive brushwork of his contemporaries. His work maintains a sense of detachment, treating the domestic items with a clinical precision. The screenprint medium is particularly suited to this style, as it allows for the flat, saturated areas of colour that define his visual language. This piece remains a clear example of his ability to transform mundane, everyday items into objects of formal interest through strict simplification and a controlled palette.
