A characterful etching by Jozef Israëls, depicting an elderly man in a contemplative pose through dense, expressive cross-hatching.
Jozef Israëls was a central figure of the Hague School, a group of Dutch painters who focused on the lives of fishermen and the rural working class. This etching captures an elderly man in a moment of quiet contemplation. The composition relies on heavy cross-hatching to define the figure against a dark, atmospheric background. By obscuring the surroundings, Israëls directs the viewer to the man's posture and the texture of his clothing.
The artist uses the etching needle to create a dense web of lines, which generates a sense of volume and weight. The light source is subtle, catching the edge of the man's hat and his hands, while the rest of the form recedes into shadow. This technique reflects the artist's interest in the tonal qualities of black and white media, a common pursuit among Hague School printmakers who sought to convey mood through light and shade rather than colour.
Israëls often depicted subjects from the Jewish community in Amsterdam or the fishing villages of Zandvoort. His work avoids sentimentality, preferring a direct observation of his subjects. The figure here appears weary, yet his presence is solid and grounded. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the artist in manipulating the copper plate to achieve varying depths of tone. It is a study in character, rendered with a focus on the physical reality of the sitter. The paper remains clean around the plate mark, which provides a stark contrast to the dark, worked area of the image. This piece is representative of the late nineteenth-century Dutch interest in realism and the dignity of the common person.
