A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitagawa Kikumaro, depicting a young woman and her attendant during a night outing.
This woodblock print by Kitagawa Kikumaro captures a quiet, nocturnal scene featuring a young woman and her attendant. Kikumaro, a student of the famous Kitagawa Utamaro, adopted the stylistic conventions of his master, particularly in the depiction of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. The composition focuses on the interaction between the two figures, illuminated by the soft glow of a paper lantern carried by the servant.
The woman in the foreground is partially obscured by a dark hood, her expression serene as she gazes forward. Beside her, the attendant holds a shamisen box, an essential accessory for a musician or entertainer of the period. The use of line is precise, defining the contours of the figures and the folds of their garments with clarity. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on subtle tones of black, cream, and muted red to establish the atmosphere of the night.
Kikumaro employs a flat perspective, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, which prioritises the arrangement of shapes and the elegance of the silhouette over three-dimensional depth. The inclusion of the chrysanthemum motif on the shamisen box adds a decorative element to the composition, grounding the figures in a specific cultural context. This print offers a glimpse into the social life of the Edo period, where the movement of individuals through the city at night was a common subject for artists. The work demonstrates the technical skill required to produce multi-block prints, with each colour applied through a separate woodblock to achieve the final image. It remains a representative example of the genre, reflecting the aesthetic values of the early nineteenth century in Japan.
