A serene Ukiyo-e woodblock print depicting three women relaxing on a traditional veranda, showcasing the refined aesthetic of the Edo period.
This woodblock print by Hishikawa Sōri III captures a quiet moment of leisure within a traditional Japanese domestic setting. The composition centres on three women positioned on an engawa, or veranda, which serves as a transition between the interior living quarters and the garden beyond. The architecture is defined by clean, linear forms, with sliding screens and structural pillars framing the figures.
The artist employs a muted palette, relying on soft earth tones, pale yellows, and subtle reds to define the garments and the surrounding environment. Each woman wears a kimono featuring distinct patterns, demonstrating the attention to textile design common in Ukiyo-e prints of this period. The figure on the left kneels while holding a fan, her gaze directed towards the garden, while the other two women are engaged in conversation within the sheltered space of the veranda. The pine tree visible on the left provides a natural anchor to the scene, its textured bark contrasting with the smooth, geometric lines of the building.
Hishikawa Sōri III, a follower of the Hishikawa school, maintains the tradition of depicting everyday life with precision. The print avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the spatial relationship between the figures and their architectural surroundings. The use of negative space, particularly in the upper portion of the print, allows the viewer to focus on the interaction of the subjects. This work provides a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the Edo period, where the balance between nature and domesticity was a frequent subject for artists. The print is a fine example of the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour layer is applied with care to maintain the clarity of the overall image.
