A sombre depiction of the biblical flood, this late masterpiece by Nicolas Poussin captures the desperation of humanity against an unforgiving natural world.
Winter (The Flood) is the final work in Nicolas Poussin's series, The Four Seasons, commissioned by the Duc de Richelieu. Painted towards the end of the artist's life, the work depicts the biblical deluge described in the Book of Genesis. Poussin moves away from his earlier, more orderly classical compositions to present a scene of atmospheric gloom and human desperation.
The composition is dominated by a dark, oppressive sky illuminated by a single flash of lightning. The palette consists of muted greys, browns, and deep shadows, which serve to heighten the sense of impending doom. In the foreground, figures struggle in the rising waters, clinging to rocks or small boats. A snake, often interpreted as a symbol of evil or the fallen world, is visible on the left bank, adding a layer of symbolic weight to the scene. The distant landscape is obscured by rain and mist, suggesting the total erasure of the world by the waters.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on the divine wrath of the event, Poussin concentrates on the physical reality of the catastrophe. The figures are small in relation to the vast, uncaring environment, reflecting a shift in his late style towards a more sombre, philosophical view of nature. The painting is a study in light and shadow, with the lightning strike providing the only source of illumination for the chaotic scene below. It remains a significant example of the artist's ability to combine narrative clarity with emotional intensity, demonstrating his mastery of composition and his late-career interest in the darker aspects of the human condition.
