A detailed 1844 engraving by Edward Goodall depicting the ceremonial Lord Mayor's Day procession on the River Thames at Westminster.
This fine engraving by Edward Goodall captures a ceremonial scene on the River Thames, specifically focusing on the area surrounding Westminster Abbey and the old Westminster Bridge. The composition centres on the elaborate state barges used during the Lord Mayor's Day procession, a traditional London event that saw the city's civic leaders travel by water to Westminster to be sworn into office. The architecture of the Abbey is rendered with precision, providing a stable backdrop to the activity on the water.
Goodall, a skilled engraver known for his work after J.M.W. Turner, demonstrates a mastery of light and atmospheric perspective here. The soft, sepia-toned quality of the print allows for a focus on the textural differences between the stone of the bridge, the wooden hulls of the barges, and the reflective surface of the river. The scene is populated with numerous figures, from the rowers straining at their oars to the spectators gathered on the banks and vessels, creating a sense of organised movement. The inclusion of the ornate barges, decorated with heraldic symbols and flags, provides a glimpse into the pageantry of nineteenth-century London life.
As a topographical record, the work offers a view of the city before the construction of the current Palace of Westminster and the replacement of the original Westminster Bridge. The print was produced for the Art Union of London, an organisation that aimed to promote the fine arts by commissioning works for its subscribers. This particular impression reflects the technical capability of the period, where the engraver's line work creates depth and volume without the need for colour. It remains a document of both the architectural history of the capital and the social traditions that defined its civic calendar.
