A 1686 etching by Johannes Kip featuring heraldic shields and a detailed study of a wooded landscape near The Hague.
This etching by Johannes Kip, dated 1686, captures a specific topographical perspective associated with the travels of Prince William III outside The Hague. Kip, a Dutch draughtsman and engraver who later moved to London, is recognised for his precise documentation of estates and regional geography. This particular work demonstrates his technical proficiency in line work, particularly in the rendering of foliage and the atmospheric quality of the open space.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The upper section features a decorative drapery motif, from which four heraldic shields are suspended. These shields bear the names Francois Doublet, Adriaen Rosa, Johan Dedel, and Johan van Byemont, providing a clear link to the social and political context of the period. The central medallion displays the date 1686, anchoring the work in its historical moment.
Below this heraldic arrangement, the scene transitions into a naturalistic study of a wooded area overlooking a body of water. The trees are rendered with fine, dense hatching, creating a sense of volume and texture that contrasts with the more open, horizontal lines used to depict the water and distant horizon. The balance between the formal, decorative elements at the top and the observational quality of the natural scene below is characteristic of late seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of cartography, heraldry, and artistic observation that defined the era. The print serves as a record of the Dutch landscape as it was perceived and documented by contemporaries of the Prince of Orange.
