An architectural watercolour by Giacomo Quarenghi, depicting the New Jerusalem Monastery through a stone archway.
Giacomo Quarenghi, an Italian architect who spent much of his career in the service of the Russian imperial court, produced this detailed study of the New Jerusalem Monastery. The composition employs a framing device, using a stone archway in the foreground to guide the viewer's eye toward the ecclesiastical complex. This technique creates a sense of depth, contrasting the shadowed, textured masonry of the arch with the light, airy depiction of the monastery buildings beyond.
The New Jerusalem Monastery, located in Istra, was founded in the seventeenth century by Patriarch Nikon. Quarenghi captures the distinctive onion domes and the verticality of the bell tower with precision. His use of ink and watercolour allows for a delicate rendering of architectural form, while the inclusion of small figures in the foreground provides a sense of scale and daily life. The artist balances the formal requirements of architectural documentation with a picturesque sensibility, common in the late eighteenth century.
Quarenghi was instrumental in introducing Palladian principles to the Russian Empire, yet this work demonstrates his ability to engage with the local vernacular of Russian Orthodox architecture. The soft palette and controlled line work reflect his training in Italy, where he studied the works of Andrea Palladio and the ruins of antiquity. This print offers a view into the intersection of European architectural theory and the specific historical context of the Russian religious landscape. The inclusion of Cyrillic inscriptions on the stone elements adds a layer of authenticity to the scene, grounding the drawing in its specific geographic and cultural setting.
