A serene maritime drawing by Jacob van Strij, depicting a quiet river scene near Dordrecht with boats and distant architecture.
Jacob van Strij, a painter and draughtsman active in Dordrecht, produced this study during a period when Dutch artists looked back to the seventeenth-century masters for inspiration. His work often features the waterways surrounding his home city, capturing the quiet atmosphere of the riverbanks. This drawing employs a restrained palette of brown ink and grey wash, which allows the artist to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the water and the distant horizon.
The composition is anchored by a small rowing boat in the foreground, where two figures are depicted in a relaxed posture. To the right, a larger sailing vessel sits moored, its masts providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal expanse of the river. In the distance, the silhouette of Dordrecht appears, with the church spire rising above the low-lying buildings. The artist uses wash to suggest the atmospheric haze typical of the Dutch climate, creating a sense of depth without relying on heavy outlines.
Van Strij was heavily influenced by Aelbert Cuyp, whose works he studied and collected. This influence is visible in the choice of subject matter and the calm, observational approach to the scene. The drawing demonstrates a technical proficiency in handling ink and wash, with delicate strokes defining the reeds in the foreground and the rigging of the boats. It is a work of quiet observation, documenting the maritime life of the Netherlands at the turn of the nineteenth century. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the piece, reflecting its history as a working study rather than a formal exhibition piece. This print captures the subtle tonal variations of the original, preserving the texture of the ink and the fluidity of the wash application.
