A classic Impressionist study of the Normandy coast, capturing the light and movement of the English Channel from the heights of the Pourville cliffs.
Claude Monet painted this work during his stay in Pourville, a small coastal village in Normandy, in 1882. The composition captures the dramatic elevation of the chalk cliffs looking down upon the English Channel. Monet employs a high vantage point, which flattens the perspective and allows the sea to occupy the upper two-thirds of the canvas.
Small sailing vessels are scattered across the water, rendered with brief, light-filled brushstrokes that suggest movement and the play of light on the surface. The cliff in the foreground is constructed through a dense application of colour, using short, broken strokes of ochre, green, and violet to represent the wild grasses and rocky terrain. This technique creates a sense of texture that contrasts with the smoother, more fluid handling of the sea.
Monet was preoccupied with the atmospheric conditions of the Normandy coast. In this piece, the bright weather is conveyed through a palette of high-key blues, greens, and pale yellows. The light appears uniform, avoiding deep shadows and instead focusing on the overall luminosity of the scene. By omitting a clear horizon line, Monet draws the viewer into the expanse of the water, emphasising the vastness of the maritime environment. This work is representative of his practice of painting outdoors, or en plein air, where he sought to capture the immediate visual sensation of a specific time and place. The focus remains on the optical experience of light and colour rather than the precise topographical detail of the coastline.
