A moody, textured still life featuring tall hollyhocks in a vase, painted by Vincent van Gogh during his Paris period.
Painted during his time in Paris, this work captures the artist's exploration of floral subjects through a sombre, moody lens. Unlike the brighter, more experimental palettes he would adopt later in the south of France, this composition relies on a muted, earthy range of tones. The hollyhocks, rendered with thick, tactile brushwork, emerge from a dark, indistinct background that pushes the flowers forward into the viewer's space.
The arrangement is vertical and dense. The tall, spiked stems of the hollyhocks dominate the canvas, their blossoms varying from deep, near-black purples to softer pinks and whites. The artist uses heavy impasto to build the texture of the petals, giving the flowers a physical presence that contrasts with the shadowy, atmospheric void surrounding them. The vase itself is partially obscured, serving as a functional base for the towering stalks rather than a decorative element in its own right.
This piece reflects the artist's study of traditional Dutch still-life painting, combined with the influence of contemporary Parisian art circles. The focus is on the interplay of light and shadow across the organic forms. The composition is tight, almost claustrophobic, which forces the eye to examine the variation in colour and the direction of the brushstrokes. It is a study in volume and mass, where the weight of the flowers is balanced against the dark, receding space of the background. The signature in the lower corner is applied with the same directness found in the rest of the work, grounding the composition in the artist's personal hand.
