A minimalist lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring a bold blue form against a soft mauve background with subtle colour accents.
Variation II on Mauve Corner is a lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, an artist associated with the second generation of American Abstract Expressionists. Frankenthaler is recognised for her soak-stain technique, where she thinned paint to allow it to permeate raw canvas, creating fluid, atmospheric compositions. This print reflects her interest in the relationship between colour, form, and the surrounding negative space.
The composition is dominated by a large, irregular block of deep blue, which sits against a pale, mauve-toned background. The edges of this central mass are organic and uneven, suggesting the fluidity of her painting process translated into the medium of printmaking. Within the blue area, a darker, shadowy form emerges, providing a subtle shift in tone that adds depth to the otherwise flat application of colour. Below this primary shape, two small, distinct marks in green and orange appear, acting as accents that disrupt the balance of the composition.
Frankenthaler often explored how colour could define space without relying on traditional perspective. In this work, the interaction between the expansive blue field and the sparse, lighter ground creates a sense of openness. The print demonstrates her ability to manage large areas of colour while maintaining a sense of spontaneity. By limiting the palette and focusing on the placement of these few elements, she invites the viewer to consider the physical presence of the ink on the paper. This piece is representative of her later graphic work, where she continued to experiment with the possibilities of lithography and screen printing to achieve effects similar to her fluid paintings.
