A 1912 etching by Anders Zorn depicting a Swedish dairy maid in a rustic interior, rendered with masterful hatching and light contrast.
Anders Zorn, a Swedish artist of international repute, produced this etching in 1912. The title, Vallkulla, refers to a traditional Swedish dairy maid, a figure often associated with the rural life of the Dalarna region. Zorn frequently returned to his home province for inspiration, documenting the customs and people of the area with a direct, unvarnished approach.
The composition captures a young woman seated within a rustic wooden structure. She holds a long staff, her posture suggesting a moment of quiet reflection or rest. Zorn employs a series of rapid, directional lines to define the form of the figure and the texture of the surrounding timber. The light enters from the left, creating strong contrasts between the illuminated areas of her face and clothing and the deep shadows cast by the wooden beams. This use of chiaroscuro is characteristic of Zorn's graphic work, where he manipulated the density of his hatching to suggest volume and atmosphere.
Zorn was a master of the etching medium, often using it to capture fleeting expressions and the tactile quality of his subjects. In this print, the economy of line is evident. He does not overwork the surface, allowing the white of the paper to function as a source of light. The figure is rendered with a sense of immediacy, avoiding sentimentality in favour of a grounded, observational style. The work reflects his interest in the intersection of traditional folk life and the technical possibilities of printmaking. By focusing on the solitary figure, Zorn directs the viewer to the psychological presence of the subject, framed by the stark, linear environment of the rural interior. This print remains a clear example of his ability to translate the nuances of light and texture into a monochromatic medium.
