A 1912 oil painting by André Derain depicting the rugged limestone cliffs and village of Vers in the Lot valley, France.
André Derain painted this view of the Lot valley in 1912, a period when his work moved away from the radical colour experiments of Fauvism towards a more structured, classical approach. The composition focuses on the dramatic limestone cliffs that dominate the village of Vers, creating a sense of geological weight and permanence. Derain employs a palette of ochre, terracotta, and muted greens, which reflects the arid, sun-baked terrain of the region.
The painting demonstrates a clear interest in form and volume. The steep, vertical rock face on the left acts as a framing device, drawing the eye towards the small cluster of buildings nestled in the valley floor. Unlike his earlier, more spontaneous works, this piece shows a deliberate, measured application of paint. The brushwork is controlled, defining the contours of the hills and the architectural shapes of the village with precision.
Derain spent time in the Lot region during the early 20th century, finding inspiration in its rugged topography. This work captures the quiet, rural character of the area while maintaining a formal rigour that aligns with the broader European interest in returning to order after the initial shocks of early modernism. The sky is rendered in soft, pale tones, providing a neutral backdrop that allows the earthy colours of the valley to take precedence. The result is a balanced, observational study that captures the physical presence of the French countryside without resorting to sentimentality or excessive ornamentation. It remains a clear example of Derain's ability to synthesise observation with a disciplined, structural aesthetic.
