A sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting a ceremonial procession of mounted standard-bearers carrying SPQR flags.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg, a Flemish artist active in the early sixteenth century, depicts a segment of a ceremonial procession. The work is part of a larger series documenting the funeral procession of Margaret of Austria or similar Habsburg state events. The composition features mounted standard-bearers carrying flags marked with the letters SPQR, a reference to the Roman Senate and People, which was frequently employed in Renaissance iconography to evoke classical authority and imperial legitimacy.
The figures are rendered in profile, moving from left to right, creating a sense of forward momentum typical of processional friezes. Hogenberg employs precise line work to define the armour of the riders, the musculature of the horses, and the folds of the heavy fabric banners. Above the procession, a decorative cartouche contains French text detailing the lineage of Maximilian I and his connections to the Burgundian and Castilian houses. This inclusion of heraldic elements and genealogical information reflects the period's preoccupation with dynastic history and the visual communication of power.
The etching demonstrates the technical proficiency of Northern Renaissance printmakers, who often balanced narrative detail with decorative framing. The use of Latin inscriptions at the base of the print, alongside the heraldic crests, provides a formal structure to the scene. This work serves as a record of the visual culture surrounding the Habsburg court, where public displays of pageantry were used to solidify political standing. The print is a characteristic example of the era's interest in classical motifs combined with contemporary courtly themes, executed with the clarity and attention to detail that defined Hogenberg's output during his time in Mechelen.
