A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting a ceremonial procession with mounted figures and heraldic motifs.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg, a Flemish artist active in the early sixteenth century, captures a segment of a ceremonial procession. The work is part of a larger series documenting the entry of Emperor Charles V into Bologna in 1530. Hogenberg provides a meticulous record of the figures, horses, and heraldic elements present during this significant political event.
The composition is organised in a frieze-like manner, typical of processional depictions from the period. In the foreground, mounted figures move across the frame, their postures and attire rendered with precision. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the textures of the horses' tack, the folds of the riders' garments, and the subtle musculature of the animals. The figures are depicted in profile or three-quarter view, creating a sense of forward motion that guides the viewer's eye from left to right.
Above the procession, the print features an elaborate cartouche containing French text, which identifies the historical figures and their titles. Flanking this inscription are detailed heraldic shields and decorative foliage, demonstrating the artist's skill in ornamental design. The inclusion of these coats of arms provides context for the noble participants, linking the visual narrative to the specific political alliances of the Holy Roman Empire.
Technically, the etching displays the clarity and discipline characteristic of Northern Renaissance printmaking. The balance between the descriptive figures and the structured, decorative elements at the top of the page creates a harmonious visual hierarchy. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the sixteenth century, where such works functioned as both historical records and displays of status. The monochromatic palette focuses attention on the draughtsmanship, allowing the viewer to appreciate the precision of the line work and the careful arrangement of the complex scene.
