A detailed sixteenth-century etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg depicting a ceremonial procession of standard-bearers and scholars in Bologna.
This etching by Nicolaas Hogenberg, a Flemish artist active during the early sixteenth century, captures a segment of a ceremonial procession. The work, titled Vaandeldragers en geleerden, plaat E, is part of a series documenting the entry of Emperor Charles V into Bologna for his coronation in 1530. The composition features a line of standard-bearers carrying large flags, followed by figures on horseback, likely representing scholars or dignitaries associated with the University of Bologna, as suggested by the Latin inscription 'COLLEGIORVM BONON VEXLLLA' at the base.
Hogenberg employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of the period's printmaking. The figures are rendered with attention to their period attire, including helmets and tunics, while the horses are depicted in profile. Above the procession, the artist includes a decorative cartouche containing French text, flanked by heraldic emblems. The crest on the left and the serpent emblem on the right provide specific historical context, linking the imagery to the noble lineages involved in the political climate of the era.
The print reflects the function of such works as visual records of state events. By documenting the order and participants of the procession, Hogenberg provides a window into the pageantry that accompanied the political shifts of the Holy Roman Empire. The balance between the rhythmic repetition of the flags and the individualised figures of the riders creates a sense of forward motion. This piece is an example of the technical skill required to produce detailed historical narratives in print form, maintaining clarity despite the density of the composition. The work remains a valuable reference for historians studying the visual culture of sixteenth-century European diplomacy and the specific iconography of the Bolognese coronation.
