A rare Late Antique textile fragment featuring repeating figurative motifs woven in wool and linen, characteristic of Coptic design.
This textile fragment, identified as a band, originates from the Late Antique period, likely produced in Egypt. It features two vertical strips of woven decoration, which were traditionally applied to garments such as tunics. The design employs a technique where wool weft threads are woven into a linen warp, creating a high-contrast effect between the dark figures and the lighter background fabric.
The imagery consists of a series of repeating registers, each containing a human figure framed by stylized architectural or vegetal motifs. These figures appear in various poses, some holding objects or musical instruments. The style is characteristic of Coptic textiles, where the human form is rendered with simplified, expressive features rather than strict anatomical accuracy. The repetition of these motifs creates a rhythmic visual sequence, typical of the decorative borders used in the Mediterranean world during this era.
Textiles of this type provide evidence of the aesthetic preferences and technical capabilities of weavers in the late Roman and early Byzantine periods. The survival of such fragments is rare, as organic materials often decay over centuries. This specific piece demonstrates the use of monochromatic or limited-colour schemes to achieve clarity in the design. The presence of a ruler in the archival photograph indicates its documentation as a museum specimen, used for the study of historical costume and weaving techniques. The composition is strictly linear, designed to draw the eye along the length of the garment. It remains a clear example of the functional yet decorative nature of ancient clothing, where woven ornamentation served as a marker of status or personal taste.
