A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro, depicting two women in a quiet, domestic moment after bathing.
Kitagawa Utamaro remains one of the most recognised masters of the Ukiyo-e genre, particularly for his contributions to bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. This woodblock print captures a quiet, domestic moment, moving away from the formalised portraits often seen in the period. The composition features two women in a private setting, likely following a bath, as suggested by their relaxed posture and light, informal robes. One woman stands, adjusting her garment, while the other sits on the floor, interacting with a small cat.
The artist employs his signature elongated proportions, a stylistic choice that creates a sense of grace and fluidity in the figures. The background is anchored by a folding screen decorated with water birds, which provides a subtle visual echo to the domestic theme. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted greys, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the figures and the small animal at their feet.
Utamaro was highly regarded for his ability to capture psychological depth and individual character in his subjects. Rather than presenting static icons, he depicts these women with a sense of naturalism and ease. The lines are precise and delicate, characteristic of the high-quality woodblock printing techniques of the late Edo period. This work offers a glimpse into the private lives of women in the pleasure districts of old Tokyo, presented with a sensitivity that distinguishes Utamaro from his contemporaries. The print serves as a fine example of the technical mastery involved in multi-block printing, where each colour layer is applied with exacting registration to achieve the final, balanced composition.
