A delicate study of two birds in flight by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, executed in ink and watercolour with a focus on anatomical precision.
Jean-Baptiste Oudry, a prominent figure in eighteenth-century French art, is widely recognised for his precise observations of the natural world. This study of two birds in flight demonstrates his technical proficiency in capturing avian anatomy and movement. The work reflects the period's interest in scientific classification and the aesthetic appreciation of wildlife, often commissioned by aristocratic patrons or royal collections.
The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the two subjects against a plain background. Oudry employs delicate ink lines to define the structure of the feathers and the curvature of the wings, while subtle washes of watercolour provide soft tonal variation. The upper bird is depicted with wings fully extended, showing a clear view of the plumage, while the lower bird is captured in a more dynamic, angled posture. The artist uses a restrained palette, relying on muted greys, browns, and soft ochres to maintain a sense of realism.
Such drawings were frequently produced as preparatory material for larger oil paintings or as part of a personal collection of natural history studies. Oudry often kept these sketches for reference, allowing him to populate his larger compositions with accurate animal figures. The paper shows signs of age, including minor foxing and discolouration, which adds to the historical character of the piece. This print captures the fluidity of the original ink work, preserving the light touch of the artist's quill and the transparency of the watercolour application. It is a clear example of the observational rigour that defined Oudry's career as a painter of animals and hunting scenes for the French court.
