A sixteenth-century etching by Léon Davent, depicting a trumpeting angel in the elongated, elegant style of the School of Fontainebleau.
This etching by Léon Davent depicts a figure, identified as a trumpeting angel, captured in a dynamic, forward-leaning pose. The work is characteristic of the School of Fontainebleau, a group of artists active in France during the mid-sixteenth century. Davent, a printmaker associated with this circle, often translated the decorative and elongated aesthetic of the Italian Mannerist style into the medium of etching.
The figure is rendered with the elongated proportions typical of the period, draped in classical-style fabric that suggests movement. The angel blows into a curved horn, positioned against a backdrop of foliage and a tree trunk. The background is defined by horizontal hatching, a technique that provides a sense of depth while maintaining the graphic quality of the print. The musculature of the figure is articulated through precise, controlled lines, reflecting the influence of Italian masters such as Primaticcio and Rosso Fiorentino, whose designs were frequently reproduced by printmakers at Fontainebleau.
Davent's technique relies on a combination of fine cross-hatching and parallel lines to model form and shadow. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the tree and the figure contrasted by the horizontal lines of the background. This print provides a clear example of the dissemination of Mannerist motifs across Europe during the Renaissance. The focus remains on the anatomical stylisation and the elegant, artificial grace that defined the artistic output of the French court under Francis I. As a printmaker, Davent played a role in circulating these sophisticated visual ideas to a wider audience, moving beyond the confines of the royal chateau.
