A devotional panel by Sandro Botticelli depicting the Holy Trinity flanked by Mary Magdalene and John the Baptist.
This work, attributed to Sandro Botticelli, depicts the Holy Trinity with the crucified Christ at the centre. God the Father supports the cross from behind, while the Holy Spirit, represented as a dove, hovers above the head of Christ. The composition is framed by two figures: Mary Magdalene, positioned on the left, and John the Baptist, on the right. A small angel stands at the base of the cross, providing a sense of scale and narrative focus.
Botticelli employs a balanced, symmetrical arrangement typical of his religious commissions during the late fifteenth century. The figures are rendered with the characteristic linear grace associated with his hand, particularly in the flowing drapery and the elongated forms of the saints. The palette relies on deep reds and dark tones, which contrast with the pale, luminous flesh of the central figure. The background, while simplified, suggests a rocky, desolate terrain, directing the viewer's attention toward the central theological event.
This panel reflects the devotional practices of the period, where such imagery served as a visual aid for contemplation. The figures of Mary Magdalene and John the Baptist act as intercessors, bridging the gap between the divine event and the viewer. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to combine theological complexity with a clear, readable narrative structure. The use of tempera allows for precise detail, visible in the treatment of the hair and the subtle expressions on the faces of the surrounding cherubim. This piece remains a representative example of the Florentine school, capturing the intersection of human emotion and spiritual iconography that defined the era.

Artist Biography
Sandro Botticelli
He worked in Florence under the patronage of the Medici family during the period art historians call the Early Renaissance. The Birth of Venus and Primavera, both painted in the 1480s, are his best-known works and among the most reproduced images in Western art. They are strange paintings. Venus stands on a shell, blown to shore by the wind, her body curved in a way that owes nothing to anatomical reality and everything to Gothic line. Primavera fills a dark orange grove with mythological figures whose feet barely touch the ground.
The paintings are technically tempera on canvas and panel, executed with a fineness of line that reflects his goldsmith training. The outlines are visible. The surfaces are flat compared to the oil-based modelling that Leonardo and other contemporaries were developing. Botticelli was not interested in three-dimensional illusion. He was interested in contour, pattern, and the way a line can describe both a body and an emotion simultaneously.
His later career was affected by the rise of the Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola, who preached against secular art and luxury. Botticelli may have burned some of his own paintings in the Bonfire of the Vanities in 1497. Whether this represents genuine religious conversion or political self-preservation is unclear. His output declined. He died in 1510, largely forgotten, and was not rediscovered until the Pre-Raphaelites championed him in the nineteenth century.
