A formal title page from 1651 documenting the funeral procession of Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik, featuring portraits of the Prince and Amalia van Solms.
This print serves as the title page for the extensive series documenting the funeral procession of Stadtholder Frederik Hendrik, which took place in The Hague in 1647. Pieter Jansz. Post, a Dutch architect and artist, designed this composition to introduce the formal record of the state funeral. The upper portion features bold, formal typography announcing the titles of the deceased Prince of Orange. Below this, the layout is divided into three distinct sections. The central area contains two circular portrait medallions: one depicting Frederik Hendrik and the other his wife, Amalia van Solms. These portraits are flanked by two columns of printed text, which provide the dedication and historical context for the funeral proceedings.
The composition reflects the structured, formal approach to commemorative printmaking during the seventeenth century. The use of clear, legible typefaces combined with precise engraving techniques ensures that the document functions as both a visual record and a source of information. The portraits are rendered with attention to the costume and status of the subjects, typical of the period's portraiture. As an architect, Post brought a sense of order and balance to the page, ensuring that the text and imagery work together to convey the gravity of the event. This print is a primary source for understanding the ceremonial culture of the Dutch Republic, capturing the official narrative surrounding the death of a major political figure. The work remains a significant example of how print series were used to disseminate information about state events to a wider audience, maintaining the memory of the House of Orange through formal, printed documentation.
