An elegant etching by the comte de Caylus, after a drawing by Jean-Antoine Watteau, capturing the theatrical figure of Tircis in fine, fluid lines.
This etching, titled Tircis, is a work by the French antiquarian and engraver Anne Claude Philippe de Thubières, comte de Caylus. The composition is based on a drawing by Jean-Antoine Watteau, whose influence on the development of the Rococo style in France was considerable. Caylus was a dedicated collector and student of Watteau's work, and he produced a series of etchings that sought to preserve the fluid, spontaneous quality of the master's original sketches.
The figure of Tircis is depicted in a standing pose, wearing a soft cap and a draped garment that suggests the theatrical costumes often found in the commedia dell'arte tradition. The line work is economical and precise, characteristic of the etching techniques employed during the early eighteenth century to replicate the appearance of pen and ink drawings. The artist focuses on the silhouette and the gentle folds of the fabric, avoiding heavy shading in favour of a light, airy quality that defines the subject against the plain background.
As an amateur engraver, Caylus utilised a technique that prioritised the integrity of the original design. The inscription at the bottom indicates the collaboration between the two figures, with Watteau credited for the invention and Caylus for the execution of the plate. This print offers a glimpse into the collaborative practices of the period, where the reproduction of drawings became a method for disseminating artistic ideas among collectors and fellow practitioners. The work remains a clear example of the French graphic tradition, where the focus rests upon the elegance of the line and the characterisation of the figure through minimal visual information.
