Three Wise Men (Christmas Card) - Nathaniel Choate

A 1931 etching by Nathaniel Choate, featuring a stylised, linear depiction of three figures in a Nativity-themed composition.

This etching by Nathaniel Choate, dated 1931, presents a stylised interpretation of the Nativity narrative. Choate, primarily recognised for his work as a sculptor and painter, employs a clean, linear aesthetic in this composition. The work depicts three figures, traditionally associated with the shepherds of the Christmas story, positioned upon a rocky outcrop. The central figure stands, carrying a small lamb, while the two seated figures observe the scene. The artist uses minimal shading, relying instead on the clarity of the contour line to define the forms of the figures and the surrounding environment.

The background is populated with a series of stars and a crescent moon, providing a celestial context to the scene. Below the figures, a small flock of sheep is rendered with simple, repetitive marks, grounding the composition. The use of negative space is deliberate, creating a sense of openness that contrasts with the density of the figures. Choate's approach to the human form here reflects a mid-twentieth-century interest in simplified, classical proportions, stripped of unnecessary detail. The work functions as a narrative illustration, balancing the requirements of a seasonal greeting card with the formal concerns of printmaking.

As a piece of ephemera, this print offers insight into the private artistic output of Choate, who was active in the American art scene during the interwar period. The etching demonstrates his technical proficiency with the needle, producing consistent line weights that maintain legibility across the plate. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the standing figure providing a counterpoint to the horizontal arrangement of the seated men. This print is a clear example of the artist's ability to distil complex themes into a concise, graphic format.
