A classic 1862 ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II, depicting the Fukagawa Hachiman Shrine with pigeons and visitors in a spring setting.
This woodblock print is part of the series 'Thirty-six Views of Yedo', produced by Utagawa Hiroshige II in 1862. The composition focuses on the Fukagawa Hachiman Shrine, a site of significant cultural activity in the Edo period. The artist employs a common ukiyo-e technique by placing a large architectural element, in this case the stone torii gate, in the immediate foreground. This creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer's eye past the structure and into the temple grounds.
Several pigeons are depicted in flight and perched upon the torii, adding a sense of movement to the scene. Below, small figures of visitors walk along the path, providing a sense of scale and daily life. The colour palette is balanced, using soft greens, earthy tones, and a deep blue gradient at the top of the print, which is characteristic of the period's printing techniques. The cherry blossom tree, rendered in delicate white, suggests the season of spring, a common motif in Japanese art to denote the passage of time.
Utagawa Hiroshige II, a student of the master Utagawa Hiroshige, continued the tradition of landscape prints that captured the atmosphere of Japan's capital. His work often features these clear, structured compositions that balance human activity with the natural environment. The print demonstrates the technical precision required in the woodblock process, from the carving of the blocks to the application of pigment. It offers a glimpse into the visual culture of nineteenth-century Japan, documenting both the physical architecture of the shrine and the social customs of the era. The print is a clean example of the ukiyo-e style, prioritising clarity of form and a harmonious arrangement of elements.
