A woodblock print from the series Thirty-six Views of Yedo, depicting the busy temple grounds of Asakusa Kinriusan in 1862.
This woodblock print is part of the series Thirty-six Views of Yedo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige II in 1862. The composition focuses on the Kinriusan temple grounds in Asakusa, a site of significant activity in the city of Yedo, now Tokyo. Hiroshige II, a student and successor to the famous Utagawa Hiroshige, adopted the master's interest in atmospheric conditions and urban life while developing his own approach to spatial arrangement.
The print employs a common Ukiyo-e technique of framing the scene with large foreground elements. A prominent red pillar and a hanging lantern dominate the left side of the image, creating a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the bustling temple approach. Below, a crowd of visitors moves through the space, their presence indicated by a collection of parasols in varying shades of blue, cream, and brown. The use of colour is deliberate, with the deep green of the trees providing a contrast to the architectural elements and the clear sky.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of the Edo-period woodblock process. The lines are clean, defining the structural details of the temple buildings and the patterns on the clothing of the figures. The print captures a specific moment in the daily life of the city, documenting the intersection of religious practice and public leisure. By placing the viewer behind the foreground objects, the artist creates an immersive experience that reflects the busy atmosphere of the Asakusa district during the mid-nineteenth century. This print remains a clear example of the thematic and stylistic continuity within the Utagawa school, focusing on the visual character of Yedo through a structured, graphic lens.
