A 1777 aquatint by Paul Sandby depicting the West Gate of Cardiff, capturing the town's quiet, pre-industrial character with fine tonal detail.
This aquatint, titled The West Gate of Cardiff in Glamorgan Shire, is a work by Paul Sandby, published in 1777. It forms part of his collection, XII Views in Wales. Sandby, often referred to as the father of English watercolour, utilised the aquatint process to replicate the tonal qualities of his original drawings, allowing for the subtle washes and atmospheric effects visible in this print.
The composition depicts a rural road leading towards the medieval West Gate of Cardiff. In the foreground, a horse-drawn cart serves as a mobile advertisement for the series itself, bearing the inscription XII Views in Wales. Figures walk alongside the cart, providing a sense of scale and daily activity. To the left, a large, mature tree frames the scene, while the distant town walls and church spires provide a clear sense of place. The use of sepia tones creates a unified, monochromatic aesthetic that draws attention to the structural details of the architecture and the textures of the road.
Sandby was instrumental in popularising topographical art in Britain. His prints were widely circulated, offering the public a glimpse into the varied geography of the British Isles. This specific view captures Cardiff before the rapid industrialisation of the nineteenth century, presenting a quiet, agrarian character. The print demonstrates his technical proficiency in etching and aquatint, particularly in the handling of light and shadow across the sky and the foliage. The work remains a valuable record of Welsh history and the development of British printmaking during the eighteenth century.
