A detailed 1503 engraving by Albrecht Dürer depicting the Virgin Mary and the infant Christ seated on a turf bench.
Albrecht Dürer produced this engraving, The Virgin and Child on a Grassy Bench, in 1503. It represents a shift in his approach to religious iconography, moving away from the crowded compositions of his earlier work towards a more intimate, humanised depiction of the Madonna and Child. The figures are seated upon a turf bench, a common feature in late medieval and early Renaissance garden imagery, which symbolises humility and the earthly realm.
Dürer demonstrates his mastery of the burin through the varied textures of the scene. The heavy, voluminous folds of the Virgin's drapery contrast with the delicate, soft curls of the infant Christ. The background features a simple wooden fence and a small bird, elements that provide a sense of enclosure and quietude. A tablet hanging from a post displays the date 1503, while the artist's monogram, AD, is visible on a stone block in the foreground.
The composition relies on a precise system of hatching and cross-hatching to create volume and shadow. By using these techniques, Dürer achieves a sculptural quality that defines the forms of the figures against the relatively sparse background. This work is an example of the technical rigour that defined Dürer's career, reflecting his interest in both the observation of nature and the mathematical principles of proportion. The print remains a clear record of his ability to balance theological subject matter with a grounded, observational style.
