A serene Neo-Impressionist view of the French coast, rendered in the precise, light-filled dots of Signac's signature pointillist technique.
Paul Signac painted The Town Beach, Collioure in 1887, a period when he was actively developing the theories of Neo-Impressionism alongside Georges Seurat. This work captures the coastal town of Collioure in the south of France, a location that attracted many artists due to its unique light and Mediterranean atmosphere. Signac employs the technique of pointillism, applying small, distinct dots of colour that blend in the eye of the viewer to create a luminous effect.
The composition is structured around the diagonal of the beach, which leads the eye towards the architectural forms on the right. These buildings, rendered with a geometric clarity, contrast with the softer, undulating hills in the background. Signac uses a palette of pale ochres, soft blues, and muted pinks to convey the heat and stillness of the scene. The absence of heavy outlines allows the light to appear as if it is vibrating across the surface of the canvas.
Unlike the earlier Impressionists, who often worked with spontaneous brushstrokes, Signac follows a rigorous scientific approach to colour theory. He places complementary colours side by side to increase the optical intensity of the image. The sky is a subtle gradient of light tones, providing a sense of vastness that balances the solid mass of the town. This painting reflects the artist's interest in the Mediterranean coast, a subject he returned to throughout his career. The work remains a clear example of the systematic application of colour that defined the Neo-Impressionist movement during the late nineteenth century.

The Town Beach, Collioure - Paul Signac
Artist Biography
Paul Signac
Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.
Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism. Signac's passion for sailing also profoundly influenced his art, with many of his paintings depicting coastal scenes and harbours across France. He died in 1935, leaving behind a legacy as both a talented artist and a key intellectual force within the Neo-Impressionist movement.
