A group portrait of the three eldest daughters of King George III, painted by Thomas Gainsborough in his characteristic fluid, atmospheric style.
Thomas Gainsborough painted this group portrait of the three eldest daughters of King George III and Queen Charlotte: Charlotte, Augusta, and Elizabeth. The work captures the young women in a setting that reflects the artist's preference for fluid, painterly brushwork over rigid formality. Gainsborough, who served as a favourite painter to the royal family during this period, utilised a light, feathery application of paint to define the textures of their silk gowns and powdered hair.
The composition arranges the sisters in a gentle, informal grouping. Princess Charlotte stands to the left, Augusta occupies the centre, and Elizabeth is seated to the right. Their expressions are calm, and their postures suggest a relaxed interaction rather than a stiff courtly display. The background remains largely indistinct, allowing the focus to remain on the figures and their coordinated, pastel-toned attire. The soft lighting contributes to the overall atmospheric quality of the piece, a hallmark of Gainsborough's later style.
This painting is part of the Royal Collection. It demonstrates the artist's ability to balance the requirements of royal portraiture with his own stylistic inclinations toward naturalism and soft colour palettes. The work remains an example of the late eighteenth-century British portrait tradition, where the sitter's personality and the artist's technical skill are given equal weight. The brushwork is particularly visible in the treatment of the lace and the folds of the fabric, showing the artist's confidence in his medium. By avoiding overly sharp edges, Gainsborough creates a sense of harmony between the subjects and their environment, resulting in a composition that feels both intimate and grand.

The Three Eldest Princesses - Thomas Gainsborough
Artist Biography
Thomas Gainsborough
He was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, in 1727. His father went bankrupt in 1733. He moved to London as a teenager and trained under the French engraver Hubert-Francois Gravelot. By his thirties he was one of the two dominant portrait painters in Georgian England, the other being Joshua Reynolds. The rivalry with Reynolds defined both their careers.
The Blue Boy is probably his most famous painting, though he would have preferred to be remembered for his landscapes. On his deathbed he reconciled with Reynolds. Reynolds later wrote that the Royal Academy had lost one of its greatest ornaments. Gainsborough died in 1788, aged sixty-one.
