A refined woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicting figures gathering shells, from his series on the four seasons.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu belongs to the series Popular Versions of Immortal Poets in Four Seasons. It depicts a scene associated with the third month of the lunar calendar, a time traditionally linked to the gathering of shellfish along the shore. Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colour blocks in a single composition. This technical advancement enabled artists to achieve a greater degree of nuance in their depictions of textiles and natural settings.
The composition features two figures on a beach. One stands, holding the hem of her kimono, while the other kneels, occupied with a basket of shells. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period, which directs attention to the linear quality of the figures and the patterns on their garments. The soft, muted palette reflects the aesthetic preferences of the mid-Edo period, where subtle gradations of tone were favoured over high-contrast saturation. The inclusion of calligraphic text at the top of the print provides a literary context, linking the visual imagery to classical poetry traditions.
Harunobu's work is characterised by the slender, graceful proportions of his subjects. This print demonstrates his ability to integrate human figures into a seasonal narrative. The water is represented by simple, rhythmic lines, while the sand is suggested through minimal stippling. The overall effect is one of quiet observation, capturing a moment of daily life that is simultaneously elevated by its connection to the poetic themes of the four seasons. This print remains a representative example of the refined style that defined the artist's output during the 1760s.
