A serene impressionist study of a winding brook in Chester, Vermont, painted by Willard Metcalf in 1923.
Willard Metcalf, a central figure in the Ten American Painters group, produced this work during his later years. By the 1920s, he had moved away from the more rigid academic training of his youth, embracing a looser, more atmospheric approach to the New England countryside. This painting captures a specific moment in Chester, Vermont, where the artist spent significant time observing the seasonal shifts of the rural environment.
The composition is anchored by the gentle curve of the brook, which draws the eye from the foreground into the middle distance. Metcalf employs a palette of soft greens, ochres, and earthy browns to describe the meadow and the stream. The brushwork is deliberate, allowing the texture of the paint to suggest the movement of water and the uneven surface of the grass. The trees in the background are rendered with a lighter touch, creating a sense of depth and airiness that contrasts with the more solid forms of the bank.
Metcalf was known for his ability to capture the specific quality of light found in the northern United States. In this piece, the sunlight filters across the meadow, creating subtle variations in tone that define the contours of the terrain. The work avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the overall mood and the interplay between the water and the surrounding vegetation. It is a representative example of his mature style, which prioritised direct observation and a harmonious balance of colour. The painting reflects his deep familiarity with the Vermont terrain, a subject he returned to frequently throughout his career. By focusing on the quietude of the stream, Metcalf invites the viewer to consider the stillness of the natural world, presented without artifice or dramatic narrative.
