An 1848 etching by Jules de Goncourt depicting a woman in eighteenth-century attire, rendered with fine, precise line work.
This etching by Jules de Goncourt, dated 1848, captures a figure dressed in the elaborate fashion of the eighteenth century. The artist, known primarily for his literary collaborations with his brother Edmond, also produced a body of graphic work that reflects an interest in historical costume and the aesthetic sensibilities of the Rococo period. The subject is depicted in a full-length pose, carrying a basket of flowers while extending small bouquets in either hand.
The line work is precise, utilising a variety of hatching techniques to define the volume of the dress and the texture of the fabric. The artist employs a delicate touch to render the ruffles and lace, creating a sense of movement within the static composition. The figure is set against a plain background, which directs the viewer's attention to the costume and the character's expression.
Jules de Goncourt often looked to the past for inspiration, and this work demonstrates his ability to replicate the stylistic qualities of earlier printmaking traditions. The monogram JG and the date 48 appear in the upper left corner, confirming the attribution and the period of execution. This print offers a glimpse into the artistic pursuits of the Goncourt brothers, who were central figures in the French cultural scene of the nineteenth century. The work is a study in historical revivalism, showing a clear appreciation for the decorative arts and the social types of a bygone era. It remains a fine example of the technical skill required for etching during this period, where the artist had to balance the demands of detail with the limitations of the copper plate. The composition is balanced and clear, reflecting a disciplined approach to the medium.
