A classic woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting the serene sacred spring at Jōgaku from his series on the Ryūkyū Islands.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the sacred spring at Jōgaku, a site located within the Ryūkyū Islands. The work belongs to the series Eight Views of the Ryūkyū Islands, a collection that demonstrates the artist's interest in geography beyond the Japanese mainland. Hokusai employs a structured composition, balancing the verticality of the pine trees with the horizontal flow of the water and the cloud formations.
The scene features a small waterfall cascading into a pool, surrounded by rocky terrain and vegetation. A structure, likely a shrine or gate, sits to the right, integrated into the natural surroundings. The colour palette relies on Prussian blue, a pigment that became accessible to Japanese printmakers during this period, alongside soft greens and ochre tones. The clouds are rendered in a stylised manner, a common technique in Hokusai's work to create depth and separate the foreground from the distant hills.
Technically, the print displays the precision of the woodblock medium. The lines are clean, defining the contours of the rocks and the texture of the pine needles. The use of negative space, particularly in the water and sky, allows the eye to move across the composition without obstruction. This series is notable for its departure from the more common subjects of the Edo period, reflecting the curiosity of the artist regarding the wider world. The print provides a view of a specific location, yet it remains filtered through the aesthetic conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where natural elements are arranged to create a harmonious and balanced image.
