A 1922 work by Paul Klee, this piece uses abstract symbols and geometric forms to explore the transmission of ideas through a textured, muted composition.
Paul Klee created The Rumours in 1922, a period during which he was teaching at the Bauhaus in Weimar. This work displays his characteristic approach to pictorial language, where signs and symbols merge with abstract forms to suggest a narrative. The composition is divided into geometric segments, each containing cryptic figures that resemble faces or schematised creatures. Klee uses a technique involving oil transfer, which creates a textured, granular surface that softens the edges of his lines.
The imagery evokes a sense of fragmented communication. The title suggests the transmission of information, perhaps distorted or multiplied as it passes between the figures depicted. Klee often explored the intersection of music, poetry, and visual art, and here the rhythmic placement of shapes mimics a musical score. The palette is muted, relying on earth tones, ochres, and subtle blues to maintain a cohesive atmosphere. The dark, linear structures act as a framework, holding the composition together while allowing the individual elements to remain distinct.
Klee was interested in the way children and non-Western cultures approached art, seeking a form of expression that felt primal or essential. In this piece, the simplified forms and the lack of traditional perspective reflect that interest. The work does not aim to represent reality in a literal sense, but rather to construct a visual equivalent for an internal state or a social phenomenon. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Klee invites the viewer to interpret the relationships between the shapes and the implied movement of the rumours themselves. This print captures the tactile quality of the original, preserving the interplay between the layered paint and the underlying support.
