A dramatic illustration by Edmund Dulac from The Kingdom of the Pearl, featuring a war elephant and chariot in a stylised, decorative composition.
The Pearl of the Warrior is a plate from the 1920 publication, The Kingdom of the Pearl. Edmund Dulac, a French-born illustrator who settled in London, produced this work during the height of his career as a book illustrator. The image depicts a dramatic confrontation between a war elephant and a chariot, rendered with the precise line work and flat colour application that defined his mature style.
Dulac drew inspiration from Persian miniatures and Eastern art traditions, which is evident in the stylised treatment of the clouds, the decorative patterns on the elephant's trappings, and the rhythmic arrangement of the figures. The composition balances the massive, textured form of the elephant against the agile, smaller chariot, creating a sense of narrative tension. The palette relies on muted earth tones, punctuated by the specific blues and reds of the military equipment, which provides a sense of historical distance and exoticism common to the period's fascination with Eastern tales.
Unlike his earlier, more ethereal fairy-tale illustrations, this work demonstrates a shift toward a more graphic, structured approach. The figures are arranged with a focus on silhouette and decorative harmony rather than anatomical realism. The use of ink outlines to define the forms allows the watercolour washes to remain clear and distinct, a technique that translated well to the high-quality colour printing processes of the early twentieth century. This print captures the specific aesthetic of the post-war era, where illustrators looked toward non-Western artistic traditions to refresh the visual language of European book design.
