A sophisticated etching by Félix Hilaire Buhot, featuring an owl and an open book surrounded by atmospheric, dreamlike vignettes.
Félix Hilaire Buhot was a master of the etching medium, known for his experimental approach to printmaking. In this work, titled 'The Owl' or 'Pauca Paucis', Buhot employs a complex, multi-layered composition that reflects his interest in the atmospheric and the symbolic. The central image features an owl perched beside an open book, a classic emblem of wisdom and nocturnal study. Below this, the Latin inscription 'Pauca Paucis'—meaning 'few things for the few'—suggests an audience of scholars or those who appreciate quiet contemplation.
Buhot surrounds this central motif with a series of vignettes that dissolve into the margins. These peripheral elements include maritime scenes, street life, and architectural silhouettes, all rendered with a delicate, atmospheric touch. His technique involves a sophisticated use of aquatint to create varying tones of grey and sepia, which gives the print a dreamlike quality. The composition is not a single, unified scene but rather a collection of impressions that overlap and fade into one another, a hallmark of Buhot's style.
This print demonstrates the artist's ability to manipulate the plate to achieve painterly effects. By layering different textures and marks, he creates a sense of depth that feels both physical and psychological. The work invites the viewer to look closely at the details, from the texture of the owl's feathers to the faint outlines of ships in the distance. It is a fine example of late nineteenth-century French printmaking, where the focus shifted towards personal expression and the exploration of mood over strict realism. The print remains a compelling study of light, shadow, and the quiet solitude of the intellectual life.
