A dramatic 17th-century history painting by Ferdinand Bol, depicting the meeting between Claudius Civilis and Quintus Petillius Cerialis.
This painting by Ferdinand Bol depicts a moment from the Batavian revolt against Roman rule, as recorded by Tacitus. The scene captures the meeting between the Batavian leader Claudius Civilis and the Roman commander Quintus Petillius Cerialis. The two figures stand on opposite sides of a fractured bridge, a visual metaphor for the fragile state of their negotiations. Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, employs a dramatic chiaroscuro technique to define the figures against a dark, atmospheric background. The composition is structured to draw the eye toward the central figures, while the surrounding soldiers, horses, and civilians add a sense of narrative scale to the event.
Bol was commissioned to create this work for the Amsterdam Town Hall, a project that sought to link the history of the Batavian people to the identity of the Dutch Republic. The painting reflects the conventions of 17th-century Dutch history painting, where classical themes were often used to comment on contemporary political situations. The figures are rendered with careful attention to their armour and period attire, while the inclusion of a winged figure above adds an allegorical dimension to the historical encounter. The lighting is focused, creating a sense of theatre that was common in the works of the Rembrandt school. The palette is dominated by deep browns, ochres, and muted tones, which serve to heighten the gravity of the diplomatic meeting. This work remains a significant example of how Dutch artists of the period interpreted ancient history to construct a national narrative.
