A Dutch Golden Age genre painting depicting two children observing a mousetrap, rendered with the characteristic light and detail of the Leiden school.
Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam, a painter active in Leiden, produced this work during the Dutch Golden Age. The composition focuses on two children engaged with a wooden mousetrap placed upon a table. The older child, wearing a hat, points towards the device while the younger child leans in with curiosity. The scene is rendered with a dark, atmospheric background that directs the viewer's attention to the illuminated faces and the central object.
Van Brekelenkam is recognised for his genre scenes, which often depict domestic life or modest trades. His approach to light and shadow reflects the influence of contemporary Leiden painters, including Gerrit Dou. The palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and subtle gradations of brown, ochre, and muted flesh colours. The texture of the wooden table and the simple clothing of the figures are captured with precise brushwork, typical of the period's interest in material reality.
In the context of seventeenth-century Dutch art, such scenes often carried moralising undertones. The mousetrap, a common household item, frequently appeared in literature and art as a metaphor for temptation or the dangers of curiosity. By capturing this quiet, domestic moment, the artist invites the viewer to observe the innocence of childhood alongside the potential for mischief. The work remains a characteristic example of the Leiden 'fijnschilders' tradition, where small-scale subjects are treated with meticulous attention to detail and a focus on intimate, everyday narratives.
