An eighteenth-century etching depicting a Parisian street tradesman at his grinding wheel, based on the designs of Edme Bouchardon.
This etching depicts a street tradesman focused on his work. The figure is hunched over a portable grinding wheel, his hands positioned to sharpen a blade. The composition is part of a series documenting the street life of eighteenth-century Paris, originally designed by the sculptor Edme Bouchardon. The Comte de Caylus, a prominent antiquarian and amateur printmaker, executed this etching after Bouchardon's drawings.
The print demonstrates the technical precision typical of the period. The artist employs dense, diagonal hatching to define the shadows and the texture of the man's clothing, while the background remains relatively spare to keep the focus on the subject. The man wears a simple apron and a hat, his posture conveying the repetitive nature of his labour. The inclusion of the grinding apparatus, with its wooden frame and circular stone, provides a clear view of the tools used by itinerant workers of the era.
Bouchardon's original drawings, known as the 'Cris de Paris', aimed to capture the diverse characters found on the city streets. By translating these sketches into etchings, Caylus helped preserve these observations of social history. The work avoids idealisation, presenting the subject with a direct, observational quality. The lines are clean and deliberate, reflecting the graphic sensibilities of the French Rococo era, where such genre studies were appreciated for their authenticity and charm. This print offers a glimpse into the daily routines of the working class in pre-revolutionary France, rendered with a balance of technical skill and documentary interest.
